An unfamiliar number flashed on the screen of Chelsea’s phone as she worked at the desk in her room at home and she debated whether or not to answer before finally hitting the button to accept the call.

“Good afternoon, this is Chelsea.” She stuck to her professional voice since it wasn’t someone already in her contacts.

“Hi, Chelsea. This is Rafe Moreno, the managing editor for Writing Hockey dot com. I received your email and tear sheets and wanted to discuss them with you. Is this a good time?”

“Oh, yes. Hello.”

“I read a little of your work over at the Observer and enjoyed it immensely. I wondered if you’d be interested in doing some freelance work with us?”

“I’d love to,” she responded automatically. “However, the newspaper is my only source of income, so I’d have to be careful about any time commitments.”

Rafe chuckled. “Aside from the guy who runs our advertising department, I’m the only full-time employee. Everyone who works for us is freelance, and I’ll be honest, no one who writes for us is getting rich. However, we provide good opportunities for attending things like the Entry Draft, All-Star games, events that are otherwise difficult to have access to. We pay a flat twenty-five bucks per article, so I understand if it’s not worth your time, but we’re a reputable online publication and we’re growing. My hope is to start paying bonuses to the top five articles each month that get the most hits for our advertisers. I don’t know if that’s something you’re interested in, but if so, I’ll be happy to answer questions you may have.”

“Well, I started covering the Sidewinders when the sports writer at the paper went on medical leave and I’m loving it. I’ve gotten to know some of the guys on the team and—” There was no way in hell she would admit to dating one of them, although that might come out at some point. She took a breath. “And many of them know me by name now. I have a good rapport with them in the locker room, so I’d love to cover the team. However, you should know that my forte is human interest stories, not analytics or the more technical details of the game. I’m not sure what types of stories you’re looking for.”

“I’m looking for stories people want to read,” he said. “Based on the ones you did on Toli Petrov and the Hockey and High Heels event, you’ve got a knack for capturing the essence of the players. I have twenty guys who can write about analytics all day long, and that’s not what your basic fan is interested in. If I can have someone in Vegas covering the human aspects of the players, I think it would be beneficial all around.”

“Sounds like something I’d like to try. How does it work?”

“I’ll send you an email with the details about payment, login information to the site where you’ll upload and format your articles, and some suggestions on what you might want to start with.
